How To Save: Walgreen's

Lots of you have questions about how things like Walgreen's Register Rewards, Rite Aids +Ups, and CVS Extra Care Bucks works.  So I'm going to do a series, each post will focus on one store, their coupon policy, info about their rewards program, etc.  I choose to do Walgreen's first because it is my favorite place to coupon.

It is very important to first read the coupon policy for any place you shop. Sometimes you will be given a hard time when trying to use certain coupons. It is very important that you have read and understand their policy. I actually have printed each stores coupon policy out and keep it in my binder, that way if I ever have an issue I will have the policy handy (I've never had a problem though.) Walgreen's coupon policy can be found here:

http://www.walgreens.com/topic/help/generalhelp/coupon_policy_main.jsp?erule=couponpolicy

Now, once you have read that policy you will probably not understand everything it is talking about at first.  So I'm going to break it down for you.

The most confusing policy they have is that the total number of coupons must not exceed the total number of items purchased.  What does that mean??  Let's say you buy one box of diapers, you have a manufacture coupon, and Walgreen's has a store coupon.  You will not be able to use both coupons, UNLESS you buy what is commonly referred to as a "filler item."  Now, what's a filler item?  A filler item can be anything, most of the time it is something small and inexpensive like a pencil or a piece of candy.  This week Walgreen's has Snickers Eggs for $0.29, that is what I used this week for my filler item (plus they are yummy!)  So now you have a box of diapers and a Snickers egg, so you will be able to use both the store coupon and the manufacture coupon!!  It is a little confusing at first, but once you get the hang of it, it's a piece of cake.

Next...Register Rewards are what prints from the Catalina machine next to the register. They are considered manufacture coupons.  How do you get the Register Rewards??  Each week (and they also have monthly UNADVERTISED deals) they have sales in their ad that will say something like "$5 Register Rewards when you buy $20 of these items..."  This is NOT something you save off of your total that day, the machine will print you a coupon for that amount, that you can use on your next transaction (and YES you can use that coupon on the same day in a different transaction).  So in order to score an awesome deal and possibly make money is to pair your coupons with the sales.  Lets use a deal I got this week as a scenario...they had Crest toothpaste and toothbrushes on sale 2/$6 with $4 Register Rewards.  I had a coupon for $1.50 off toothpaste and $1 coupon for a toothbrush.  So I purchased 1 toothpaste and 1 toothbrush, took those two items to the register, gave the cashier my coupons, and paid out of pocket $3.50, then the register printed out a $4 coupon, therefore I MADE money from this deal.

Next...Walgreen's does NOT limit how many Register Rewards you can receive, BUT you cannot get more than one RR for a specific deal in one transaction.  So say I got 4 of those toothpastes and paid for them together, I would use four $1.50 off coupons, and pay $6 out of pocket, BUT only one RR for $4 would print.  Therefore I did not make any money from this deal, even though it was a good deal.  In order to get back 2 $4 RR I would have to break up those transactions, and pay for 2 toothpastes, then pay for the next, that way at the end of each transaction I would get a $4 coupon. So I would end up making $1.00 for buying those 4 items in 2 separate transactions.

Next...Walgreen's has several sources for their store coupons, these are coupons printed by Walgreen's that you can pair (commonly referred to as stacking) with a manufacture coupon. You will find these store coupon's in the monthly booklets, these are located in the front of the store where they have their weekly ad display.  They also have a beauty booklet with coupons that is located at the cosmetics counter.  I have also heard of a baby care coupon booklet, but I have yet to locate one of those.  There are also store coupons located in the weekly ad.  These are usually located at the bottom of the pages, an are surrounded in usually red dashes. An example from this weeks ad was a coupon on the back page of the ad for Charmin toilet paper for $2.88.  Most of the time you will not have to cut these coupons out, the cashier can just scan them.

So this is just a break down to try and better explain Walgreen's coupon policy and their Register Rewards.  I hope this information is helpful to you all.

As always, thanks for reading!!

God Bless & Happy Couponing!!
